10 Online Jobs for Online Students

Going back to college can be difficult if you work regular hours. But the flexibility of online jobs can be very handy when you’re juggling online college classes or on campus classes. Many times, online jobs give you free reign on your schedule so you can work around school. (And you can work in your pajamas, which is a definite plus.) More and more people are taking advantage of the flexibility of working from home and in 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that 11.3 million people worked from home. Of those that did, 51 percent were women . And out of ALL the people who worked from home, about 47 percent had at least a bachelor’s degree! That’s 17 percent higher than the national average.

If you attend an online college or university, working from home is a great advantage in finishing up school. (See this list ofleading online colleges and universities .) So what kinds of online jobs are out there for you?

Oh, I’ll feed you, baby birds.

I trolled the Internet for only the tastiest online jobs. I skipped all the outbound phone call jobs, the scams, and the ones with too many exclamation points in the title. Aren’t those annoying? Of course, there are “genres” of jobs online. You’ve got customer service, data entry, technical advice, phone receptionist, secretarial work, and a few others. The majority are customer service jobs, though.

Online Customer Service Jobs:

1. Uhaul

Uhaul offers a fantastically awkward video on their website about the online job opportunities available. Feel free to soak up the information.

FYI, there is literally 45 seconds of “pumped up for working” music at the beginning of the second video. Holy potatoes, that’s nearly a minute of your precious time! If you’ve been looking for a job for a while with no luck, I’d recommend listening to the full 45 seconds to get pumped up for working. If you are already pumped up, well, get some glow-sticks and just have fun with it.

The Uhaul requirements for working from home are:

  • Have your own USB headset
  • Can upload and download at Internet speeds of 1MB or greater. (If you don’t know how much your computer can handle, you can test it at http://www.speedtest.net.)
  • And your computer must have:
    • Windows XP, Vista 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows 7 32-bit, or 64-bit operating system
    • 5GB hard disc space or greater
    • Pentium 4 or higher processor
    • A network card
    • 1GB RAM (minimum) 2GB (recommended)
    • Anti-virus software. (Comodo or AVG are highly recommended, and are free! Free is awesome.)

The requirements are pretty simple, which makes it a lot easier to apply for the position.

2. Newcorp

In purple type, there is a “list” of locations. Jacksonville, NC, and Everywhere, USA. If you live in Jacksonville, click on Jacksonville. If you don’t live there, click on Everywhere. Easy peasy. There is only one position available at the moment, and I don’t know if they update it periodically or if this job listing is standard catchall for online jobs.

Newcorp has a lot more requirements than Uhaul, so read the list carefully to see if you qualify.

3. Plantronics

They like to use the word “exciting” a lot on their page, and fortunately they have a lot of job openings right now. The business is currently expanding and looking to fill dozens of new positions. That means your odds of landing a job are pretty exciting!

4. Convergys

Convergys allows people to work from home as well as commute to work. They have many locations across the US.

5. Teletech

Requires an online application to start. This one is probably one of my favorites simply based on how excited the employees are in the photos. One lady is holding a cup of coffee as if it were filled with liquid Christmas. Could you do that from a cubicle? No! That kind of job satisfaction only comes from sitting in your own chair and wearing pajamas at work!

6. The Connection

They offer a wide range of different job positions, which I really like. There’s just something magical about doing something new every single day. They have positions in multichannel services, inbound call center services, outbound teleservices, interactive voice response (IVR), email response, live web chat, crisis management, third party upsell, and fulfillment services.

Data Entry Jobs

Data entry is great if you are a fast typist. All you do is…enter data. Pretty self-explanatory.

7. Capital Typing

A leading company in the world of data entry. It includes positions in secretarial services and office administration, transcription services, data entry, online customer support, and language translation services.

8. HEA Employment

HEA Employment has one of the most boring looking websites in the world. Though it seems to have a lot of traffic, so apparently the beige isn’t offensive to most people.

9. Key For Cash

Key For Cash is an international company, which I only realized when I saw all the pound signs next to the dollar signs on their website.

I’m wary of any job that boasts how “easy” it is to do. Being “easy” is code for “this job is so monotonous that within a week you’ll be pounding your head on the keyboard.” Here’s an excerpt from their answer to “What is KeyForCash”: The website is designed in such a way to make this as easy as possible: We show you the data in an image, and you type it in. It couldn’t be easier! They used “easy” twice. You know what that means, right? They’ll pay a ton of money because the job is so awful that nobody wants to do it! Win! Jobs like this are pretty awesome because you don’t do a whole lot but you’re getting paid a ridiculously large amount. If you don’t mind the boredom, this just may be the job for you.

10. TDEC

A great website. No, seriously. They even say DES (Data Entry Specialist) to make the position sound fancier. Unfortunately, it requires some experience (1-3 years) in data entry. If you have done it before, though, you’re looking at almost $19/hr just for typing stuff on a computer from home, drinking your liquid Christmas.

Pros and Cons of Online Jobs and Working at Home for Online Students

Pros

There are so many more jobs out there that you can do from home. This is just the tip of the iceberg. These jobs, and those like them, are perfect for online college students (or on-campus students) of all ages, and those who need to spend as much time at home as possible. You can make your own hours, when it’s convenient for you, and still go to school, run errands, and whatever else you want to do between work hours. With an online job, you’ll definitely have enough time to take online college courses.

My favorite type of schedule is actually broken up throughout the day – something you can’t do with a normal job or school schedule. Working from home and taking online classes allows night owls to work ridiculous hours in the middle of the night, letting them sleep all day. And it lets those weird “morning people” work early in the morning, freeing up the rest of their day to do those annoying productive things they’re always talking about.
